SUBJECT: ST3500320AS Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3Gb/s 500-GB Hard Drive I come back from holiday 2 weeks ago, switched on my computer and after the BIOS posted, nothing happened. My boot drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11, firmware SD15. I googled this thread and concluded that it must be a sudden firmware issue causing the “breakdown” of my hard drive (I could still hear it spin up to speed but my BIOS reported no hard disk detected. I checked the power and SATA wiring with my other hard drives and these were detected as usual).
I contacted Seagate support Tuesday, TNT came at Seagate's expense to pick up the unit Thursday. Arrived at Seagate Amsterdam service centre Friday. Received message same day saying that it was a firmware issue and they were on the case. Unit arrived back on Tuesday.
Put the drive back in my PC that night and it booted into my Windows XP OS as if nothing had ever happened. Conclusion: very disappointed and worried that drive developed this issue in the first place but first class Seagate service thereafter. I use three identical drives and have now updated the firmware for the remaining two. Hopefully this will be the last time this type of issue arises. Hope this helps. Januz I also tried to put drive into an external drive enclosure as well as several different machines, changing bios settings as I went. Black mesa vending machine. No combination worked.
The drives are shipped with a bad firmware issue that has a bug in it. This needs fixing before any machine will recognised the drive. Options available to get the drive flashed with a non bug ridden firmware are either:- 1) Seagate ( best option if they will do it ) 2) Data recovery expert ( Costly ) 3) Do it yourself ( using numerours guides on internet) Regards. Update: I shipped the 500 Gb drive last evening per Seagate instructions.

This morning I received email that drive received. This afternoon I receive email stating that they determined it was faulty firmware and was corrected. Soon thereafter, I received email that they backup my data and will retain for 14 days (in case I have problems with the drive) AND that the 'media' has been shipped back.
I was given UPS tracking number. Amazing service! Thanks for the help! I wish you success: with Seagate or with the 7200 fixit procedure in the link above.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced what it says is the world's highest-capacity 2.5-inch mobile hard drive: Its, with 500GB of storage capacity. The new drive is expected to be available beginning in February, 2008. Pricing was not announced. The Travelstar 5K500 will be available in both 400GB and 500GB capacities, as well as an 'Enhanced Availability' (EA) version designed to work in server environments.
The drive employs a Serial ATA (SATA) interface. The new Travelstar 5K500 also features Hitachi technology including Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS), which stabilizes the drive - particularly in installations where it may be perturbed by premium speakers that cause the chassis to vibrate. Data is written to three separate platters within the chassis; the drive features a 1.9 watt read/write power draw and a 0.7 watt low power idle.
The Travelstar 5K500 measures 12.5 mm tall and spins at 5400 RPM.
