Although lots of Game Publishers are now releasing their games for Mac as well, EA for example. Fact: Keynote kicks Powerpoint's ass. Mac also has M$ office;) Fact: If you are on budget, do not buy a Mac. /quote CS4 out-performs CS5 on some features if you are running 64bit kernel. Aperture is photo editing and management software.
Nothing about the OS is wrong. The drivers for OpenGL are not the best. That can be explained by these articles: quoteOn Windows, it's a fact that the DirectX graphics drivers are better maintained than the OpenGL graphics drivers. This is caused by the vicious cycle of vendor support. As game developers are driven from OpenGL to DirectX by other factors, the graphics card manufacturers (vendors) get less bug reports for their OpenGL drivers, extensions and documentation. This results in shakier OpenGL drivers, leading even more game developers to switch from OpenGL to DirectX.
I'm running Halo Combat Evolved with the 2.0.2 patch applied on a Mac Mini Core Solo 1.5 GHz with 1 GB of RAM and OS X 10.4.9. Halo runs quite well on this.
The cycle repeats. Similarly, it's a fact that more gaming graphics programmers know how to use DirectX than OpenGL, so it's cheaper (less training required) to make a game using DirectX than OpenGL. This is the result of another vicious cycle: as more game projects use DirectX, more programmers have to learn how to use it. As more programmers learn to use it, it becomes cheaper for game projects to use DirectX than to use OpenGL./quote - The UI you talk about as 'superior' is because it based around a document that gives developers a very good explanation of how the visual appearance of something effects how we create the usage metaphor for it as well. Colour reproduction is only as good as your monitor is calibrated. After spending the last week making a library for converting between different image compression formats I know a thing or two about how color in images is derived and I would appreciate an explanation as to how one set of code could possibly create a completely different set of colour values than another for parsing for the same data.
The only way I can see this happening is if someone screwed up the parsing code by a lot. I would like to think that does not happen on a commercial software product on such a large scale as an OS. Anti-virus is a null point. It is a fact that your average windows box is less secure than your average unix box. Now before someone decides to jump down my throat about this, I need you all to consider what 'average' means. This means to add up the total savvyness of every person that has a windows computer in their homes and then divides that by the total number of people.
This WILL put the level of know-how down very far from the level of people that frequent this board because lets face it, you all are not grandma. Second thing is that the person that will have a unix box in their house is going to be pretty savvy about what they do for security. You don't buy little timmy a unix box for his 5th birthday now do you.
You don't expect him to type up his 6th grade homework in emacs/vi now do you. You cannot accurately compare two systems with different environments of security focus. Furthermore, since I don't believe that anti-virus does anything effective, you are only as safe from viruses as you want to let yourself be. I know a number of people that don't use anti-virus on windows and they are just fine because they don't do stupid things.
Same applies with OSX, sure 99% might not ever get a virus, does not mean it is any less likely if they do stupid things. PS, I wrote malicious code for OSX for a few years. Yes it can be done, yes it is hard to do effectively, yes I do know what I am talking about on this subject. Hi, I am dirk, I have been using OSX for the past 11 years, and I have been using Mac OS for 9 before that.
Some people work best on windows, other work best on linux, others work best on OSX. It is ultimately about what environment you best perform in to product the best product you can, not about ego or self-image. quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: Photoshop CS5 Runs faster in Mac OS /quote Fact: It runs faster on $700-800 PCs then it does on $1000 macs. quote Fact: Windows does not have Aperture for video editing /quote Fact: Windows has more video editing software then Mac does. Windows has CS5 and Sony Vegas, which is PC only. Autocad for mac requirements. quote Fact: Halo's best music was all made in a Mac (Halo 1's, Halo 2's. All of Halo's songs actually) /quote Fact: The software he uses works on a PC too.
Plus, in an interview, he said he wished his software upgraded easier. Another reason macs are bad: They fail at upgrading. See PowerPC macs for example. quote Fact: Mac Os is NOT a suitable gaming platform. Although lots of Game Publishers are now releasing their games for Mac as well, EA for example.
/quote Which I agree with. And all the Mac Games currently are cheap ports. quote Fact: Keynote kicks Powerpoint's ass. Mac also has M$ office;) /quote Fact: Nobody in the real world uses keynote.
Mac office also is overpriced, and has compatability issues with PC office. quote Fact: If you are on budget, do not buy a Mac. /quote Fact: If you are or aren't on a budget, do not buy a mac.
You can get a high end PC for cheaper then a mac is. And if you are afraid of viruses, just install linux.
Mac Pros are a ripoff too, you could get a Dell or HP workstation for less. And they can't accept PC gpus either, so you can't swap in a normal FireGL. And let's not forget that macs use standard PC components all the time. So you pay more just so Steve Jobs can get a private jet.

For example, the Macs at my girlfriend's school cost about $1000 each according to the tech in the room. Photoshop performs better on my $800 computer than those $1000 Macs.
quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: Windows does not have Aperture for video editing/quote Fact: There are plenty of other (and better) video editing options available for Windows. quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: Halo's best music was all made in a Mac (Halo 1's, Halo 2's. On a comparatively-specced PC, the performance for this software is the same while maintaining a significantly smaller price point. quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: Mac Os is NOT a suitable gaming platform.
Although lots of Game Publishers are now releasing their games for Mac as well, EA for example./quote Agreed here. quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: Keynote kicks Powerpoint's ass. Mac also has M$ office;)/quote Fact: Powerpoint is the industry standard for creating presentations in a workplace environment, and MS Office is price $100 higher for a version that runs on Mac OS without Windows emulation or dual-booting. quotebPosted by:/b Musashi 360 2 Fact: If you are on budget, do not buy a Mac. /quote Fact: If you can afford a Mac, you can afford a PC that blows it out of the water for the same price provided you know how to shop and can build it yourself. As for my reasons for choosing PC, I'll keep it simple: I wanna play any computer game I want instead of a handful, I want access to a much larger base of useful software that doesn't get developed for Macs unless third parties are involved (Xfire?), my DAW of choice is Windows-only (FL Studio), I'd like to be able to upgrade my computer with stuff that's not proprietary and overpriced, and if I buy new, I can get more out of a PC than I can out of a Mac despite spending just as much.
I can't see how anyone would actually think that the increased price somehow brings about better performance in the same components (because it REALLY doesn't, the same hardware in a Mac isn't somehow magically better), and how an environment that virus coders don't care about is a good trade-off for software compatibility. quotebPosted by:/b PufTheMgicDingo Lol, so much PC fanboyism it hurts. Gamewise, yes. Work-wise, depends on your job;) Linux is better for servers Windows is better for games and making them as well (much easier and better tools for their creation) Mac is better for design, music, art.
Oh and browsing the web safely;) The only drawback is thier price. Cause you say a pc will outperform a mac any-day. I have run photoshop CS5 on a 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini with 2 DDR3 RAM. And to my surprise it launched and performed better than my friend's 3.06 ghz Core 2 Quad PC with 8 GB DDR3 RAM.
It also launched the OS faster;) (not the same os) And don't ask me why, it just did.;) So, as I said above, it depends on what you wish to do on the computer to make a choice. I don't know, and I don't care, make the logic out for yourself. But as for the thread itself, Buying it for mac is expensive (like $100) and no retailers sell it (aside from amazon or eBay) because it sold out. But there is another way, if you are not too zealous to what OS you use (like most mac users), then there is always Crossover (it costs $30 but even with Halo PC, you STILL save $50) or Boot Camp, so you can play the PC version.
