The problem: I can get sound from Windows 10 and I can get sound on Edge. Games, Spotify, Chrome, nothing else can play sound.
I'm using an ASRock A55M-HVS motherboard and I have an Radeon HD 7750 graphics card. The audio driver had been installed on Windows 7, using the CD that came with the motherboard.
I upgraded to Windows 10 some days ago and had no audio problems then. On the Sound Mixer, no software is listed as an audio source, except System Sounds. Not even Edge, even if Edge is playing sounds.
How it started: I told Windows 10 to detect and fix an HDD problem. It restarted to fix it, and it also updated Windows 10 after the restart (last night). When it returned, the problem began. I attempted to reinstall the driver using the one that came with the motherboard. This caused windows to crash and get stuck on system thread exception not handled. Restarted in safemode, uninstalled the audio driver, windows 10 worked again. But the sound problem persists.
What I've tried: Updating audio driver Uninstalling VIA HD audio driver from Device Manager, reinstalling it. I got my audio driver from here Disabled Enhancements Running the AudioPlaybackDiagnosis. It either accuses no problem or says the Audio device is disabled.
Restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint. So I've reset windows 10 and things went back to normal.
However, just right now, after I sent the PC to sleep and woke it back up, it installed updates and the problem has returned. So I'm fairly certain it is caused by the updates. EDIT: Went into safe mode, uninstalled the updates, things are back to normal. Checking my update history, these are the updates that were installed: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.203.1480.0) Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081424) Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3074686) Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3074678) However, I still appreciate some help on this problem, because uninstalling updates and stopping automatic updates is only a temporary solution. The situation has gotten even worse now.
First, even though I had stopped the Windows Update service on the services window, it still updated. Though this time no problems were seen. But then I sent the computer back to sleep again, when I turned it back on it couldn't restart anymore. I got a bad system config info error and it keeps trying to check the C disk. As I said earlier, this is a brand new HDD, I don't think it is corrupted. All I've done it was partition it when I installed Windows 7 and that was it. Macmall citrix sys support software maintenance. Now I can't restart my computer, not even in safe mode.
The only option is resetting. This is becoming unbearable. My machine can't go a whole day without a problem and unwanted updates keep forcing themselves into my machine. I started with a fresh install, then had to format and now I'll have to format again.
